NDIS changes can feel confusing. You’re not alone.
By Karen Graham, CEO and Joseph Archibald, Executive General Manager Indigenous Services
The NDIS is changing, and many Aboriginal people with disability, families and carers may be feeling unsure about what comes next.
When systems change, it can be hard to know what information matters, what applies to your situation, and what steps to take. For families who rely on NDIS supports day to day, that uncertainty can feel overwhelming.
That is why asking questions early matters.
You do not need to wait until your plan is due for review, your funding changes, or you feel like you have run out of options. If you are unsure about your plan, eligibility, providers, services or supports, it is better to reach out early and talk it through with someone you trust.
For Aboriginal people with disability, access to the NDIS has not always been easy. Too many families still face barriers finding services that are culturally safe, accessible and responsive to their needs. When the system becomes harder to understand, there is a real risk that people may delay asking questions, disengage from the NDIS, or assume they are no longer eligible when support may still be available.
Some helpful questions families may want to ask include:
- What does this mean for my current NDIS plan?
- Will my funding or supports change?
- What happens at my next plan review?
- What information or evidence should I keep?
- Who can help me understand my options?
- Where can I get culturally safe support?
Culturally safe support matters because it recognises more than a person’s plan or funding. It understands culture, community, connection and the realities families are facing. It means walking alongside people, listening properly and helping them feel more confident about what comes next.
Windaan has supported Aboriginal families since the early days of the NDIS. We are a registered NDIS provider, and we remain committed to delivering support that is grounded in culture, connection and community.
If you are worried about your plan, funding, eligibility or services, reach out early. You do not need to have all the answers before asking for help.
We are here. We listen. We walk with you.
